“When Work Works:Status Report on Workplace Flexibility” prepared for the American Business Collaboration

Source Analysis:The publication is non-profit and non-partisan, but receives funding from major corporations such as TimeWarner,Chevron,IBM and Johnson and Johnson. There are publications of studies done concerning working families which are each individually funded. One of these that was particularly interesting is “Generation and Gender”, funded largely by the Ford Corporation. The study found “family-centric” workers to have better mental health and higher job satisfaction. They also noted that women with small children are less likely to want to advance than men, possibly wanting to avoid “negative spillover”, meaning not having time for both family and work.Women are also more likely to work two shifts, one at work and one at home.

Usefulness:The studies on families,in particular working women, will be very useful in deconstructing my topic. The site was created to educate companies and managers about the multi-layered motivations of their workers. It is directed more to companies than to lay people, but is written accessibly. Some of the studies could potentially be biased because of the funding behind them. The site did link me to other possible sources, such as the NSCW.
