Seventy-seven cents to a dollar

Image of 77cents next to a dollar. This is a simple, but effective visual reminder that women’s pay is just pocket change compared to men’s. http://www.feministcampus.org/images/egreeting/equalpay.jpg

Title: Seventy-seven cents to a dollar.

Publication Information:The Feminist campus website serves as the “World’s largest pro-choice student network.” The main organization is headquartered in Arlington,Va, with satellites at college campuses across the nation. The site gives details on how to create a Feminist Majority Foundation on your campus, providing handouts, factsheets, and manuals. Also, there is a feminist news update, journalist center and career center.I could not find information about how many members there are nationwide. This particular image was created under their fair pay documents to send as an email greeting.

Support:The actual numbers used in the image are from Us census bureau statistics that I have previously annotated. The actual wage difference could have (hopefully) changed by this time, but there is no new  government information provided.

Source Analysis:The Feminist campus site is targeted toward campus organizers, teachers, and students looking for a resource for women’s issues. It seems to be funded by donations and possibly campus group fees. There was no evidence of major corporate funding.

Usefulness:This image is an extremely effective communicator. To see the pocket change next to a dollar bill creates a big impact, and I find it offensive to suggest that women are worth less than men.The image will be a good addition to my presentation, as I’m sure many people will react to the reality very emotionally.
